Phnom Penh, 11 September 2026 — Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia, on Friday evening met with H.E. U Min Aung Hlaing, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, at the National Assembly Palace during his State Visit to Cambodia.

The two leaders discussed ways to deepen Cambodia–Myanmar relations through parliamentary cooperation, high-level exchanges, people-to-people ties and collaboration in areas of mutual interest.

Samdech Khuon Sudary warmly welcomed H.E. U Min Aung Hlaing and his delegation, describing the State Visit as an important milestone that would open new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries and their peoples.

She congratulated H.E. U Min Aung Hlaing on his election as President of Myanmar and expressed confidence that the visit would further strengthen the longstanding friendship between Cambodia and Myanmar.

Samdech Khuon Sudary noted that the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1955 and have maintained close ties founded on mutual respect, trust and understanding. Their shared cultural traditions and Buddhist heritage, she added, provide a strong foundation for closer relations.

She emphasized that cooperation between the two legislatures plays an important role in deepening bilateral relations and complementing the work of the two governments.

In this regard, Samdech Khuon Sudary encouraged greater exchanges between parliamentary leaders, parliamentary friendship groups, women and young parliamentarians, and Secretariat-General officials. She stressed that a people-centred approach should guide such cooperation to ensure direct benefits for both peoples.

The two leaders also highlighted the important role of young people in national development and encouraged greater educational and youth exchanges. Such exchanges, they noted, would help younger generations understand, preserve and advance the traditional friendship between Cambodia and Myanmar.

Samdech Khuon Sudary expressed the National Assembly of Cambodia’s full support for the outcomes of H.E. U Min Aung Hlaing’s talks with Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Acting Head of State, and Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia.

She also welcomed the signing of four cooperation documents during the State Visit, covering the elimination of double taxation, reciprocal promotion and protection of investments, cultural cooperation, and media and information cooperation.

Samdech Khuon Sudary stressed the importance of translating these commitments into tangible outcomes that contribute to national development and improve the well-being of both peoples.

She called for broader practical cooperation in education, trade and investment, agriculture, energy, public health, climate change, disaster management, tourism and human resource development.

Samdech Khuon Sudary also underscored the importance of dialogue and the peaceful settlement of disputes, noting that conflict deprives countries of opportunities for development.

“War produces no true winners; all parties suffer losses,” she said. “Peace creates opportunities for development, while conflict deprives countries of those opportunities, with women and children bearing the heaviest burden.”

In connection with media and information cooperation, she warned that fake news in the digital era can spread fear and confusion, making people feel insecure even in times of peace. She therefore stressed the importance of responsible information-sharing in maintaining public trust, social stability and lasting peace.

Samdech Khuon Sudary further emphasized that ASEAN unity and centrality are vital to helping the region navigate geopolitical uncertainty and promote peace, stability and prosperity.

For his part, H.E. U Min Aung Hlaing thanked Samdech Khuon Sudary for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him and his delegation. He noted that this was his first meeting with the President of the National Assembly of Cambodia and welcomed the opportunity to exchange views with her.

H.E. U Min Aung Hlaing congratulated Samdech Khuon Sudary on becoming the first woman to serve as President of the National Assembly of Cambodia. He also commended her leadership in promoting women’s participation in politics.

Both leaders agreed that women’s empowerment and gender equality are critical to peace and sustainable development. H.E. U Min Aung Hlaing noted that one of Myanmar’s vice-presidents is a woman and that women account for more than half of the country’s government officials.

Samdech Khuon Sudary commended Myanmar for its strong representation of women in government, adding that Cambodia had also achieved a similarly high level of women’s participation.

The Myanmar President reaffirmed his support for closer relations between the two governments, legislatures and peoples. He noted that Cambodia and Myanmar share historical, cultural and religious similarities and that large segments of their populations live in rural communities and depend on agriculture.

H.E. U Min Aung Hlaing identified agriculture as an important area for cooperation and expressed interest in strengthening educational exchanges and human resource development for the benefit of both peoples.

He emphasized that Parliament represents the voice of the people and plays an essential role in nation-building. He supported closer exchanges between the two legislatures, particularly among their parliamentary friendship groups, women parliamentarians and young parliamentarians.

H.E. U Min Aung Hlaing also reaffirmed Myanmar’s commitment to nurturing its traditional friendship with Cambodia and expanding cooperation in trade, the economy, defence and people-to-people exchanges.

He invited Samdech Khuon Sudary to visit Myanmar at a convenient time to further strengthen parliamentary friendship and cooperation.
